New genomic index for gestation length

The EvaLiM® test allows the genetic potential of Limousin cattle to be predicted from birth, thanks to DNA analysis based on a simple hair sample. In 2024, a new reproductive trait was added to this evaluation: the gestation length.
Controlling the gestation length is essential for optimum management of reproduction and farm productivity, as it varies by up to 40 days and has an impact on the calving-to-calving interval, the birth weight and stillbirth rate of calves, as well as the unproductive life of dams.
By exploiting more than 3 million insemination and birth dates recorded over 20 years, the R&D team at the “Pole de Lanaud"  has developed a genomic index for accurately estimating the length of gestation.
This innovation offers all Limousin breeders a valuable tool for  a better control of this essential parameter. It is also of benefit to cross-breeding farms, particularly with dairy breeds, as it has an effect on the productive life and lactation period of inseminated females.
