Monitoring Sow Behavior in Real Time

MoSBReaL is an automated device for monitoring sow behavior in farrowing crate developed by the research units GenPhySE and ASSET. Comprising two IP cameras and a Raspberry Pi microcomputer, it monitors two sows simultaneously. The microcomputer manages the data flow and estimates the posture of sows in real-time. The software differentiates eight postures (sitting, standing, kneeling, lying on the belly, right/left side with teats not visible, and lying on the right/left side with teats visible). It records postures every 30 seconds, day and night. The innovation lies in the use of image analysis with a Yolo-v8 neural network. Alliance R&D and IFIP, have accumulated a wide range of images, with 20 devices installed on different farms, and to detect sow behaviour with 91% precision. MoSBReaL allows studying and including behavioral traits in pig breeding programs. Easy to install and use, this device is suitable for a wide range of pig farming conditions.
