Tool to assess the risk factors of neonatal diarrhea in piglets
Neonatal diarrhea (ND) affects the health and quality of the weaned piglet. It is responsible for major economic losses. The involvement of pathogens but also of non-infectious factors must be considered. Ceva Santé Animale decided to support farmers by carrying out a specific audit process in the farrowing unit. The aim is to assess the main risk factors for the occurrence and persistence of neonatal diarrhea. 47 criteria are evaluated and then weighted to obtain a final score out of 100. The higher this score is, the better the level of prevention. This audit is carried out during a visit during the week of farrowing before the onset of diarrhea. Then practical corrective actions directly applicable by the farmer are advised. The tool in its digital form is offering a report supported by observations and photos of the situation and the farm. It’s an easy, objective and concrete tool to use that allows to compare the level of prevention between farms or of a farm over time.
